Therapeutic Communication Skills
Critique of Therapy Session
In reviewing the therapy session, several principles of the therapeutic modality were applied effectively. The therapist demonstrated active listening by maintaining eye contact and using open-ended questions. This allowed the patient to explore feelings without judgment. Empathy was evident when the therapist validated the client’s emotions, showing understanding and acceptance. At times, the therapist shifted quickly to the next question instead of allowing reflection. Overall, the session showed consistency with therapeutic principles, though deeper exploration might have enhanced effectiveness.
Personal Reactions and Future Application
While watching the session, I noticed my own responses to the therapeutic style. I felt encouraged by the therapist’s supportive communication, yet I also sensed opportunities for improvement. I reacted positively to the use of reflection and paraphrasing, as these techniques helped clarify patient thoughts. However, I felt less engaged during moments where the therapist redirected too quickly. This observation reminded me of the importance of pacing.
In my future PMHNP practice, this modality can enhance patient care by fostering trust and openness. Consistently applying therapeutic communication will strengthen relationships and support patient-centered outcomes. The approach also aligns with my professional goal of creating safe and empathetic spaces. With continued practice, I believe these techniques will become natural and improve my clinical presence.
In summary, the therapy session illustrated core principles of the modality. By reflecting on both effective and missed opportunities, I gained valuable insight. This experience reinforced the importance of empathy, listening, and collaboration in my future PMHNP role.
