Of the multitude of strategies discussed this week for increasing work enjoyment for staff, what is your favorite/most preferred strategy discussed in this module? How will you integrate this strategy into your supervision practice in the future? What will it look like when you implement it with a supervisee/trainee? Preferred Strategy: Recognition and Strength-Based Feedback
One of the most impactful strategies discussed this week was the use of recognition and strength-based feedback to enhance work enjoyment. This method not only acknowledges a supervisee’s efforts but also reinforces their unique contributions and professional growth. According to Housman (2021), consistent positive feedback fosters intrinsic motivation and increases employee satisfaction. In my future supervisory practice, I will integrate this strategy by regularly highlighting a trainee’s strengths during supervision sessions. For example, after observing a role-play session or reviewing clinical notes, I will begin feedback with a recognition of what was done well, tied directly to the supervisee’s skill set. This will help build confidence and create a safe, affirming supervisory relationship. Long-term, I anticipate that this practice will enhance trainee engagement, reduce burnout, and foster a more collaborative supervisory environment.
Overemphasis on Corrective Feedback
Conversely, one practice I plan to avoid is the overemphasis on corrective feedback without balance. Solely focusing on what needs improvement may diminish a trainee’s self-efficacy and increase anxiety. While constructive criticism is essential, when not paired with positive reinforcement, it risks discouraging growth.
