My research examines how inequality shapes poverty by limiting access to resources and creating lasting impacts across generations. My thesis is: Inequality in education, healthcare, and employment opportunities perpetuates poverty and deepens social divides, leading to long-term disadvantages for marginalized groups. By understanding these dynamics, we can design better policies to disrupt cycles of poverty.
One article by Chetty et al. (2018) shows that neighborhood-level inequality directly affects children’s future income and health. Another study by Reeves (2017) highlights how economic segregation reduces social mobility and traps families in poverty. Desmond’s (2016) research on eviction demonstrates that housing instability, driven by income inequality, has lasting effects on mental health and employment. A fourth article by Marmot (2020) analyzes how disparities in healthcare access contribute to chronic illnesses among low-income populations, further entrenching poverty. Lastly, Putnam (2015) explores the weakening of social networks in poor communities, revealing how diminished social capital limits upward mobility.
