Emphysema in Older

Cardiovascular/Pulmonary PowerPoint Presentation

Goal: Develop a PowerPoint presentation on a cardiovascular/pulmonary disorder/disease discussed in the McCance text. (EMPHYSEMA)

The presentation must provide information about the incidence, prevalence, and pathophysiology of the disease/disorder to the cellular level. The presentation must educate advanced practice nurses on assessment and care/treatment, including genetics/genomics—specific for this disorder. Patient education for management, cultural, and spiritual considerations for care must also be addressed. The presentation must specifically address how the disease/disorder affects 1 of the following age groups: infant/child, adult, or older.

Incidence, Prevalence, and Pathophysiology

Emphysema is a subtype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and predominantly affects individuals over 65. In the U.S., over 3 million people have emphysema, with most being older. At the cellular level, the alveolar walls are destroyed, reducing surface area for gas exchange. This leads to air trapping and reduced oxygen diffusion. Chronic inflammation and enzyme imbalance contribute to progressive lung tissue damage and respiratory decline.

Assessment, Genetics, and Treatment

Assessment includes history taking, pulmonary function tests, and imaging such as chest X-rays or CT scans. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder, can predispose individuals to early-onset emphysema. Treatment includes bronchodilators, corticosteroids, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation. Advanced practice nurses should monitor response to treatment, manage exacerbations, and promote smoking cessation. Genetic counseling may be recommended for younger family members if a genetic component is confirmed.
