Abstract
This interpretive analysis explores insights drawn from a comprehensive genogram of my family. The paper addresses the definition of family from a personal and cultural standpoint. It details my family’s structure and patterns of communication and analyzes intergenerational dynamics and critical life events. Using family systems theory and key psychological terms, this paper reflects on familial patterns such as mental illness, substance abuse, and relational bonds. It offers a culturally and contextually grounded interpretation of the family unit.
Defining Family: Cultural and Personal Perspective
The concept of “family” extends beyond biological ties for me; it includes godparents, close family friends, and extended kin who played formative roles. This inclusive view shaped my genogram to include spiritual kinship and chosen family. This is especially common in collectivist and Afro-Caribbean cultures. In these cultures, spiritual and community-based support systems are often valued as highly as blood relations.
Family is also understood through a cultural lens. My ethnic background emphasizes interdependence, respect for elders, and spiritual traditions. These values influenced how I depicted family relationships, highlighting the involvement of extended family and religious mentors. This cultural framing gave additional depth to the genogram.
