Communication Style Adaptation
Dear Mom and Dad,
I arrived here last week. The trip was terrible. Dr. Stevens says that my leg will be better soon. My roommate is very strange. The police say my money is gone forever.
Please send $1,500 to my new address right away.
Thanks!
Your loving son
Mark
Because you were at the accident and can fill in the details, Mark asks you to explain everything to his parents. SO:
1. Write a short letter to Mark’s parents filling them in on what happened.
2. Write a paragraph to your best friend or significant other about the same events (think of how you might post it on Facebook, or how you may send a text or email.) Talk like you would to that person.
1. Formal Letter to Mark’s Parents
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to explain the situation surrounding Mark, as he asked me to update you while he recovers.
Last week, shortly after arriving on campus, Mark was involved in a car accident on his way back from a local store. Thankfully, emergency responders were quick to arrive, and he was taken to the hospital right away. While his leg was injured, the doctors—specifically Dr. Stevens—have said he will recover fully with rest and proper care.
Unfortunately, during the incident, his wallet was lost, and the police believe it may have been stolen. A report has been filed, but they say it’s unlikely the money will be recovered. Mark’s new roommate has been kind enough to help during this time, though understandably, the two haven’t had much time to get to know each other.
Mark is currently resting and has asked me to relay his request for $1,500 to cover some immediate needs, including medical costs not covered by insurance and to help him get settled……………….
