Selected Companies and Case Studies
For this milestone and the final project, I selected Google LLC and McDonald’s Corporation. These companies were chosen due to their global presence and frequent involvement in workplace ethics and legal controversies. Two case studies were reviewed: one involving Google’s employee walkout in 2018 over sexual harassment claims and another examining a 2020 lawsuit filed against McDonald’s alleging racial discrimination. Both cases offer strong insights into HR challenges and organizational accountability.
Strengths and Weaknesses Identified
Google demonstrated strength in employee empowerment and activism. However, the walkout revealed a weakness in leadership response to ethical concerns. McDonald’s, on the other hand, maintains strong safety protocols in its restaurants, but the lawsuit highlighted systemic diversity and inclusion issues. These weaknesses reflect gaps in addressing ethical complaints and ensuring equitable treatment in the workplace.
Societal and Cultural Influences
Societal expectations around gender equality and racial justice heavily influenced employee and public reactions in both companies. In Google’s case, cultural pressure demanded greater transparency and corrective action on harassment claims. In McDonald’s case, societal focus on racial equity amplified the impact of the lawsuit. These situations demonstrate how corporate actions are increasingly judged through a social lens.
