Understanding Poverty in School Contexts
In my teaching experience, I supported a student from a low-income, immigrant family. The child struggled academically due to limited access to learning materials and lacked internet at home. Her parents worked multiple jobs, which reduced their involvement in school activities. This situation mirrors Samantha and Aiesha’s challenges in the case study. Both situations show how poverty restricts student achievement and parental engagement.

Additionally, the child in my experience often felt isolated and embarrassed. She lacked proper clothing and school supplies, which affected her confidence. Similarly, Aiesha in the case study faced bullying due to her socioeconomic status and cultural identity. This led to absenteeism and declining grades, a common pattern among children from underserved communities.

Cultural Barriers and Solutions
