Initial Discomfort and Uncertainty
I once struggled to engage in a classroom discussion on racial privilege. Although I cared deeply about the topic, I hesitated to speak. I feared misusing terminology like “white privilege” or “intersectionality” and unintentionally offending others. This led to silence rather than participation. I was unsure how to articulate my thoughts without sounding ignorant or dismissive. My lack of confidence made it difficult to contribute meaningfully to the conversation.
Facing the Challenge
The uncertainty came from not fully understanding the concepts I wanted to discuss. I understood the existence of systemic racism, but I found it difficult to explain how it related to privilege and power structures. I also struggled with identifying my own positionality within the conversation. I wanted to be respectful and inclusive but felt unprepared.
