Remember, the goal of any assignment for any class is to demonstrate your learning. With that in mind, please have multiple pages from the course open as you work on this assignment, and use those to review the content and guide your response. Please avoid searching for answers online, which will likely impede your learning.
Assignment
Choose one of the options below, and develop a response of at least 500 words. Please double space your document. Use MLA or APA formatting if you know how. If you don’t know these formatting styles, just make sure that each time you quote from a reading, video, or lecture, that you make it clear which one you’re referring to; also, include page numbers if the document has page numbers (like the book by hooks). This is not , so it doesn’t need a formal structure. However, it should be well-organized and well-edited–just to make sure your ideas are clearly presented.
Option 1
Consider how patriarchal culture impacts sexual scripts, and discuss how individuals might replicate this patriarchal system with their sexual partners; examine the dynamic this can create and how it impacts individuals’ sexuality. (While I usually encourage that you use examples from personal experience, please do not include details about your sex life! I encourage you to reflect on your own experience on your own, but it would not be appropriate to write about your sexual experiences here.)
You might consider, for example, how people perform gender expectations in sexual situations, making assumptions about who should “take the lead” in sexual situations or what is the appropriate way to express enjoyment in sexual encounters. Or, consider how social pressures about virginity or the “appropriate” number of partners might impact a person’s decisions around sex, just to name a few examples. You may discuss people of any gender identity or sexual orientation, but keep in hypothetical. Remember, the goal is simply to illustrate how you’re understanding how socially constructed gender influences people’s sexual lives. How do gender expectations impact your family dynamic? (If you believe that they don’t, please choose one of the other two options for your assignment; do not choose Option 2 if you believe gender expectations have no impact on your family.) How do family expectations about masculinity and femininity impact the members of your household and the roles they perform? Based on what you’ve learned from the readings here, what are some factors that contribute to the gender pay gap? What would it take for women to fully achieve economic self-sufficiency as well as safety and fulfillment at work? Make sure to consider intersectionality in your discussion, as people experience the workplace differently based not only gender, but on other aspects of their identity, like race or ethnicity. Hint: Everything in this class comes down to gender expectations, though there are various concepts you could discuss here.
