Causes of Employee Stress

Employee stress can stem from various sources, both internal and external to the work environment. Common causes include excessive workloads, unrealistic deadlines, job insecurity, lack of control over tasks, and poor work-life balance. Additionally, unclear job expectations, limited support from supervisors, and interpersonal conflicts can significantly heighten stress levels. Organizational culture that emphasizes constant productivity without recognition or rest can also contribute to burnout.

Consequences of Stress

The consequences of unaddressed stress are both physical and psychological. Employees may experience fatigue, insomnia, headaches, or gastrointestinal issues. Emotionally, stress can manifest as anxiety, depression, irritability, and decreased motivation. In the workplace, stress can lead to reduced productivity, frequent absenteeism, low morale, and higher employee turnover. Long-term exposure may also increase the risk of chronic diseases such as hypertension and heart disease, thereby impacting both the individual and the organization.
