Leadership Competency Development
Description
The purpose of this final reflection is to help you tie the eight competencies that you have learned to demonstrate why they can help a student be a better student leader.
In about 2 pages, develop a reflection that answers the following questions. Write the reflection as if you were writing to a prospective employer. Be as specific as you can: when discussing strengths and weaknesses, refer to the specific competencies and give examples.
- What did working through these modules teach you about yourself? Which areas are you doing well in, and where are there opportunities for growth. Talk about each sub-competency.
- What is your action plan for continuing to develop these competencies? You may want to reflect on specific examples that relate to remote working or learning.
- How do each of these competencies tie together? How do each of the activities/projects/assignments that you submitted related to being a student leader?
- How does this badge apply to your major (e.g. previous courses you have taken; future courses you may need to take)?
- How does this badge relate to your future career? Be specific, and remember that your future employers did not take this course, so you will need to translate what you learned into language that they understand.
Learning Through Leadership Competencies
Working through these modules taught me a great deal about my personal strengths and areas for growth. I discovered I communicate effectively and work well in diverse teams. For example, during a group assignment, I encouraged respectful dialogue and supported team goals. This reflected growth in communication, teamwork, and intercultural fluency.
However, I also noticed challenges with technology and career development. Although I complete tasks well, I must learn advanced tools used in professional settings. Additionally, I realized I must plan more proactively for my long-term career path. Despite these challenges, I now feel more aware of how to improve.
Applying Competencies to Career Goals
Moving forward, I plan to continue growing through active engagement. I will explore online courses that focus on digital collaboration. I also intend to meet with career advisors to improve my resume and networking skills.
Importantly, each competency connects to the others. For instance, ethical reasoning helps guide leadership and decision-making. Teamwork improves through communication and cultural awareness. These connections strengthen leadership overall. Activities such as case studies and group work mirrored real-life job experiences. I applied leadership skills while managing club events and resolving conflicts.
This badge aligns closely with my major, [insert major]. It connects to both current and future courses in leadership and strategy. More importantly, these skills prepare me for a career in [insert career field]. Employers value adaptability, communication, and ethical decision-making—skills I now possess and continue to develop.
