Family Relationship Patterns: An Interpretive Genogram Analysis

Definition of Family and Cultural Influences

To me, “family” extends beyond biological connections to include individuals who provide consistent emotional support, guidance, and shared identity. This can encompass close friends, godparents, step-relatives, and foster families. My definition of family influenced the content of the standard genogram by incorporating non-traditional figures who played central roles in caregiving, mentoring, or spiritual guidance. For example, a godmother who raised me after my parents’ divorce holds equal importance to a biological parent. Culturally, my family is of Afro-Caribbean heritage, where extended families and non-blood relationships play a major role in child-rearing. Spiritually, family members often hold distinct roles as prayer leaders or spiritual mentors, which are key dynamics in family cohesion………….
