Mark’s Campus Accident
This Journal is a 2-part one. Read about the “situation” below:
During the first week of the semester, one of your friends, Mark Jefferson, is in an accident and is hospitalized. While still under the effects of anesthesia, he scribbles the following note for you to mail to his parents:
Dear Mom and Dad,
I arrived here last week. The trip was terrible. Dr. Stevens says that my leg will be better soon. My roommate is very strange. The police say my money is gone forever.
Please send $1,500 to my new address right away.
Thanks!
Your loving son
Mark
Because you were at the accident and can fill in the details, Mark asks you to explain everything to his parents. SO:
1. Write a short letter to Mark’s parents filling them in on what happened.
2. Write a paragraph to your best friend or significant other about the same events (think of how you might post it on Facebook, or how you may send a text or email.) Talk like you would to that person.

Mark’s Campus Accident
Part 1: Letter to Mark’s Parents (Formal Tone)
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to share some important information about Mark and to clarify the note he sent you.
Mark arrived here safely last week to begin the semester. A few days ago, unfortunately, he was involved in a minor accident. He was crossing campus when he slipped and fell, injuring his leg. He was taken to the hospital right away and is currently recovering. Dr. Stevens assures us that he will heal completely in a few weeks.
Due to the medication he was on, Mark may not have expressed everything clearly. His roommate is a little eccentric but harmless, and Mark is still getting used to living with someone new. As for the police reference, Mark’s wallet was lost or possibly stolen…………..
Part 2: Message to a Friend or Significant Other (Informal Tone)
OMG, you won’t believe what happened. Mark literally just got here for school and already ended up in the hospital He wiped out on campus and messed up his leg—he’s okay, though! Still a little loopy………….
